Who does not have the love for Japanese food, especially sushi? Not me. So to fulfill my craving for sushi, me and my cousin went to Sushi Shop – a chain of Japanese restaurant in Nice, France.
If you are a sushi lover, you could not miss out this amazing restaurant . Founded by Grégory Marciano and his partner Hervé Louis Adrien Schompré in the late 1990s, Sushi Shop now has 75 stores all over France that mostly located in busy centered areas. Sushi Shop is developing overseas in many countries in Europe like Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Spain, and also in New York City. French famous cooks such as Cyril Lignac, Jean-Francois Trap, or Thierry Marx are now the partners and the faces of Sushi Shop.
The day me and my cousin decided to go Sushi Shop was a gloomy day in Nice. We arrived at Sushi Shop after five minutes of lunch opening hours (this proved how much we love sushi not how lame we were waiting for it to open). We walked in and saw an open spaced with very simple furnitures but it made the restaurant becoming modernistic. We were not the first who entered, there was another man. With the advantages of coming in early, we choose the “best seat in the house” – “the million dollar table” – the table next to the window ignoring all the staring and looking from outside.
After going through the menu, I figured out this is the kind of restaurant that they only serve sushi, sashimi, and maki; which is accurately to the name – Sushi Shop. You know how people call their restaurants Chinese restaurant but then serve all kinds of Asian food? It is always better to focus on one thing at a time, at least I think so. However, for me, the menu is not really diverse. They do have a lot of choices of combos, types of rolls or sets of rolls but they are very limited on the ingredients. Salmon is the main component beside tuna and other vegetables. It was not a problem for me since I love salmon. We ended up ordering Salmon Sashimi, Salmon lover, and California Lover (gotta stick with the basic).
It took more than a little bit longer than I thought for them to bring up the food. I guess it is a good thing because they have to prepare the sashimi and sushi from scratch in order to make it fresh. All the waiting was paid off, the salmon Sashimi was so good! It was new, fresh, and had a buttery taste. I actually felt it melting in my mouth. We basically finished that dish in no time.
Coming up next was my Salmon Lover, there are 4 different kinds of rolls: one with only salmon, one with salmon and avocado, one was wrapped with salmon and cream cheese inside, and the last one was salmon spring roll. My first favorite was the spring rolls, it contains the asian flavor by adding coriander in it. My other favorite was the cream cheese one. I did not know that cream cheese and salmon work that well with each other. It was a mouth full of a perfect combination of the richness of salmon with a little bit of sourness and fatness of cream cheese.
Otherwise, my cousin got the California Lover. Truthfully, I was not impressed with it because visually, the rolls were kind of messy and loose. My favorite was the rolls with tuna and green apple. I never tried sushi with apple in it before so that was a new experience for me and it surprisingly worked. Although, the tuna seemed like canned-tuna, dry and tasteless.
As time passing by, many guests came in and out of Sushi Shop with all the staffs moved around writing up orders or picking up food to deliver. My cousin and I were so full and pleased with the quality of the food. We finished our meal and headed out to go eat ice cream (please don’t judge us). It started to rain and we both were like: “Screw this, we just have quality sushi.” We ended up going home soaking wet but still smiled like two people who just got high.
